The 2025 Barry County Fair is just around the corner and our Hastings High School FFA students are ready to shine!
One of the greatest advantages of having an agricultural barn on our school property is that it provides students with a place to house their fair projects. This opportunity is especially valuable for those who may not have the resources or space at home, allowing them to gain hands-on experience in raising and showing animals at the fair.
This year, the barn is home to fair projects for three of our students.
Kass Harton, a recent graduate of Hastings High School and former FFA Officer, has been working hard with her two beef steers housed at our barn. These steers arrived back in Fall 2024, and since then, Kass has dedicated countless hours to halter breaking, walking, grooming, and feeding them. The beef steer project is one of the longest and most demanding fair commitments a student can take on, and Kass has met the challenge.
Carisa Rosenberger, a senior at Hastings High School and current FFA Vice President, is showing two lambs and two dairy feeders this year. Dairy feeders arrived in February and required bottle feeding three times a day: early mornings before school, quick checks during the day, and more care after evening sports practices. While not as long-term as the steer project, raising dairy feeders and lambs still demands time, patience, and precision. Carisa’s lambs, which arrived in late spring, have been receiving daily attention through walking, grooming, and a carefully planned diet to prepare them for the show ring.
Sophia Greenfield, also a senior at Hastings High School and the FFA Treasurer, is raising two show lambs in our barn, as well. She and Carisa have teamed up to monitor their animals’ weight and health, ensuring they're on track for a strong showing at the fair.
These three young women are outstanding examples of leadership, dedication, and agricultural excellence. In addition to their FFA involvement, they are active members of 4-H and valuable contributors to our school and community.
Be sure to stop by the Barry County Fair to meet Kass, Carisa and Sophia, and of course, their hard-working animals.
